Challenge 3

Unmet Needs for Self-Management

Self-management is not just a tool — design, communication, and equal opportunities must also be considered. Standard solutions rarely fit everyone and often overlook those who need support the most.

Challenge 3

Unmet Needs for Self-Management

Self-management is not just a tool — design, communication, and equal opportunities must also be considered. Standard solutions rarely fit everyone and often overlook those who need support the most.

Focus areas

  • Target interventions for patients with high treatment needs.
  • Develop automated and flexible tools that support patients’ self-management.

How can we design support for patients that truly matches their diverse self-management needs?

Ideas for action:

  • Develop tailored interventions for citizens with frequent healthcare contact, involving social workers, families, and welfare technology.
  • Explore automated and personalized self-management tools—especially for musculoskeletal disorders and chronic stress or pain.
  • Distinguish between self-management, motivation, and being left to “manage on your own”—where is the boundary?
  • Combine self-management strategies with broad public education, including campaigns targeting workplaces and local communities.
  • Support efforts to strengthen digital health literacy for all, ensuring patients understand and can use digital tools effectively.
